Metal Merchant is not to be denied in Ascot Thriller

A tremendous duel took place in the final quarter mile at Ascot today, as the Recycled Products Ltd owned METAL MERCHANT went toe to toe, neck and neck with the admirable Jeff Koons to eventually prevail by the barest of margins in the Racing Welfare Classified Stakes (0-90) over the straight mile.

This was METAL MERCHANT’s first win in over a year but that doesn’t tell the whole story as the three year old has taken in many of the season’s major festivals and a host to top level handicap opposition and still come through with the grit and determination that one couldn’t help admiring.

As Jack acknowledges, he’s lucky to have such a willing horse in his ranks.

“Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood, he’s had a real grafting year and has never let us down. I was bitterly disappointed at Newbury two weeks ago when he just got edged out and as the battle developed in the closing stages today, I was willing him on.

“I just wanted him to get the win he so richly deserved after all the sport he’s given us this season and he really dug deep. That’s a great credit to him (he’s only come down two pounds since May) and an indication that he’s got plenty of days ahead of him in the big handicaps to come.
